Animation and Style
Though this short film is 3d animated, the textures and backgrounds are all hand-painted and then reprojected onto the 3d geometry in the scenes.
For many of the shots, the process was rendering out a still frame, painting on top of that still frame, and using that painting as a projection mapped texture on the background.
If a shot had more camera motion, projection mapping wouldn't work, so I left the buildings with their individually painted textures instead.
Certain shots had more painting on top of the final rendering as well, to cover up some of the overly clean 3d edges or to add stylized motion blur.
Breakdown
I put together a breakdown video going through the process of making the film from modeling and animation to rendering and compositing.
